It is now available to play on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X and S. As one of the latest and the sixth installment in the Black Ops series. Overall, it is the seventeenth installment in the overall Call of Duty series.

What Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has to offer? (End-User experience)

The story of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War takes place during the Cold War in the early 1980s. The story of the game is based on Green Beret turned CIA SAD operative Russell Adler and his mission to stop a USSR extremist group in 1981. The maps and scenes in the game are inspired by actual events and the campaign mode features real locations including East Berlin, Vietnam, Turkey, and various Soviet KGB headquarters.

In the beginning, the players are given a custom character to play within the campaign mode, the character is codenamed as “Bell”. The game offers players the ability to choose their intelligence agency, nationality, skin tone, and gender; as well as different personality traits that give different perks during the game. The campaign mode features multiple endings and also this depends on the player choice throughout the campaign.

You can play the game in single-player as well as multiplayer mode. The multiplayer mode features advanced and promising game modes. The maps are well accommodating for both the traditional 6v6 format, as well as larger 12v12 combat. Recently, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War also introduced a new game mode named “Fireteam”. This new mode can support up to 40 players at a time.

Zombies combat has become a regular mode in every shooting game. In zombie mode, there is a new storyline titled “Dark Aether” which is the expansion in the original Aether story which was concluded in Black Ops 4.

Graphics

The graphics settings of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War are divided into four many categories.

  • Details and textures
  • Shadow and lighting
  • Ray tracing
  • Post-processing effects

You will see many common options such as regular texture quality, low to high shadow quality, and effect quality in the game graphics settings. Ray tracing is also sub-divided into local shadows, sun shadows, and ambient occlusion. It lets you choose how you want to see them in the game. There is almost no difference in ray tracing settings whether you turn it on low or medium unless your system can handle either high or ultra. However, it is recommended that it is probably not worth the steep performance hit. Many professional players suggested that ray tracing is a better option only for a single-player playthrough than competitive matches.

In addition to ray tracing features, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War has multiple settings for DLSS. It may include performance, balanced, quality, and ultra-performance. The players usually stuck with the performance option and cranked all ray tracing options to ultra-performance along with the other graphics options.

The special effects in the game did an overall great job. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War’s special effects mainly impact two things in Black Ops Cold War. One thing is the quality of smoke and the second thing is the visual fidelity of flames. The only good thing about special effects is that they do make your Molotov cocktails and smoke grenades look nicer and realistic.

Is Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War fun to play?

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is simply a brilliant game. The campaign mode of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is completely enjoyable in its visual presentation. Players from all around the world showed much love in these additions and they further wish for them to become a mainstay in the series.

After going through the critics and reviews, it is suggested that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is worth playing for and specifically for the campaign mode alone.

How much playtime is required to start enjoying the game?

Just after the video introduction and promo of the game, you will be redirected to the character creation option. In Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, at that stage it feels different from other Call of Duty games. In the character creation option, you are given to select your name, gender, and skin tone. The entire game is in the first person, and you can never actually see your character while playing.

Another interesting thing about the game is that you are asked to select your background and psychological profile. This is not just for appearance as it has a direct impact on your playstyle.

After setting up your character, you can directly jump into the map and can compete against other players right away.

Verdict

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is an incredible shooter game and is a great addition to the series. It has won many notable honors and is a wonderful achievement. However, competitive players are not taking it as a great eSports multiplayer shooter that it should. The developers are continuously working on the updates and making it more smooth. This is one important reason why CS: GO is successfully making its way through 2021.
