Western Digital has announced two new external SSD drives under its WD_Black brand designed for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. It is important to note that these new external SSDs are not designed to expand the SSD storage currently available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but rather this is a backup hard drive for both consoles.
Western Digital notes that the WD_Black D30 Game Drive SSDs will allow you to store PS5 and Xbox Series X/S games, but you will not play those titles directly from the external storage device and will need to transfer them to the console before you can play.
However, you can store and play PS4 and Xbox One games on the console, meaning you can use this device as an alternative to store your older games instead of having to sacrifice some of your already limited internal storage on your ninth-gen console. Both external SSDs are also compatible with PC in addition to the eighth-gen consoles, the PS4 and Xbox One.

Storage for the ninth-generation consoles has been a sore spot for Sony and Microsoft. Both consoles launched with an upgradable expansion slot, but the PS5’s is currently unusable, while the only SSD that takes full advantage of the Series X/S hardware is Seagate’s Expansion Card, which only comes in a 1TB configuration and comes at a steep $220 price.
Sony may release an update this summer that will allow you to upgrade your internal storage with a compatible M.S SSD drive.
Western Digital said that the WD_Black D30 Game Drive will come in three configurations: 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB and will start at $90 depending on the model and storage configuration you select. The WD_Black D30 Game Drive SSD, which works for the PS5, is available now, while the D30 Game Drive for Xbox is slated to launch sometime in June.
